Code: Class 1 (Violation seriousness level)
Description: Class 1 is the most serious DOB violation class, called “immediately hazardous,” and it means there is an urgent risk to life, health, safety, property, or the public. It usually requires fast correction and can lead to high penalties if you ignore it.
Practical Meaning: If you receive a Class 1 violation, treat it as an emergency: contact a qualified design professional or contractor quickly and follow DOB instructions without delay. You may face higher fines, enforcement actions, or even stop work if you do not act.
Where You May See It: DOB violation notices, OATH/ECB summons, BIS and DOB NOW records, letters from your expediter or architect, lender or buyer due diligence reports.
Why It Matters: Class 1 violations can block sales or refinancing, trigger strict deadlines, and bring strong enforcement until the unsafe condition is corrected and certified. Do not confuse this with Class A/B/C HPD violations, which use a different class system.
