Code: Class of Violation (Classification system)
Description: A category that shows how serious a DOB or HPD violation is. DOB uses Class 1 (most serious), Class 2 (moderate), and Class 3 (minor); HPD uses Class A (non-hazardous), Class B (hazardous), and Class C (immediately hazardous).
Practical Meaning: The class determines your deadline to fix the problem, the penalty amount, and whether DOB will issue a Stop Work Order. Class 1 violations require immediate action and carry the highest fines, while Class 3 violations have longer correction periods and lower penalties.
Where You May See It: DOB Notice of Violation, BIS violation details page, ECB hearing notices, HPD violation orders, property inspection reports
Why It Matters: Class 1 violations can lead to Stop Work Orders, criminal referrals, and fines in the thousands; ignoring them puts your property, tenants, and yourself at legal and safety risk. Lower classes still require correction but give you more time and carry smaller penalties.
