IBC

Code: IBC (official acronym)

Description: (International Building Code) is a model building code created by the International Code Council that sets minimum safety and health standards for building design and construction. Many states and cities, including New York, base their own local construction codes on this model and then add their own changes.

Practical Meaning: Just remember, the city version is the one that actually applies to your building. When you see IBC in an engineer’s or architect’s report, it usually points to general model‑code concepts.

Where You May See It: It is less common on DOB violation letters or in BIS/DOB NOW, where NYC Construction Codes references are used instead.

Why It Matters: Just remember. Using the wrong (pure IBC) standard instead of the NYC Construction Codes can lead to design changes, delays, or extra cost if DOB rejects the plans.
