New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA)

NYCHA
New York City Housing Authority – NYCHA

The New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) was created in 1934. It is the largest public housing authority in the United States. NYCHA provides public housing and manages Section 8 programs that help eligible households pay rent. Some NYCHA housing developments are part of PACT (Permanent Affordability Commitment Together). Under this program, private or nonprofit partners manage the buildings. NYCHA continues to own the properties and monitor how they are managed.

How NYCHA differs from other agencies

Why NYCHA matters for tenants

Who you contact for repairs depends on who manages your building. If NYCHA manages your building, report repair problems through the MyNYCHA app or website. You can also call the NYCHA Customer Contact Center at 718-707-7771. You can report emergency maintenance problems 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

If your building is part of PACT, contact your property management company first to report repair problems. NYCHA still owns the property and monitors the program. The management company handles daily maintenance and repairs.

NYCHA also manages Section 8 rental assistance programs. This assistance helps eligible households pay rent. Receiving Section 8 assistance through NYCHA does not always mean that NYCHA owns or manages your building.
