New York City requires that the gas piping in your building be inspected by a Licensed Master Plumber every four years. The deadline depends on which community district your building is in — each district has its own inspection year.
Check the full schedule in the guide below to find your deadline
If your building is in district 4, 6, 8, 9, or 16 — your deadline is this year, 2026.
Do you need to comply?
Most one- and two-family homes in NYC are exempt from this law. If your building is classified as a one- or two-family home (DOF codes A1, A2, etc.), you most likely do not need to do anything. Check your building classification at DOB’s Buildings Information System if you are not sure.
In simple terms
If your building is legally classified as a one‑ or two‑family home (Occupancy Group R‑3), Local Law 152 gas piping inspections usually do not apply to you.
However, if your small building has any commercial space (for example, a small store on the first floor) or shows a different classification in BIS/DOF records, you should assume Local Law 152 may apply and double‑check your status before ignoring the deadline.
Also, if your building is not exempt but truly has no gas piping or only inactive/capped gas lines, you may not need a full inspection, but you will still need the correct “no gas” or “no gas service” certification filed with DOB.
